Our primary mission is to educate the public on the need for a strong Sea Service. We were thrilled to have been awarded a grant-in-aid from the State of Hawaii to promote and educate our local citizens on the upcoming commissioning of the USS HAWAII (SSN-776). The $100,000 award will be used to inform our residents on the importance of the Nuclear Navy to our local Hawaiian economy and the defense of America.
We continue to support our Naval Sea Cadet Corps, as well as Radford and other Public High School NIROTC programs. This past summer, we sponsored a group of these youngsters to tour the Mighty Mo Battleship and chow down at the Truman Mess Line onboard.
Working with the U.S. Navy we offered several embarkation opportunities for our members: Two Destroyer Day Trips; two Aircraft Carrier embarkations, aboard the Military Sealift Command (MSC) Refueler Ship, and several historic Barge tours. In addition, we revisited the WWII Red Hill Area Underground Fuel Tanks, which are quite the architectural designed feat for its time history.
In 2006, we held a Meet and Greet at the Pacific Club in order to educate state Legislators about the Honolulu Council Navy League, the USS HAWAII (SSN-776) Commissioning, and to let them know we are a valuable resource of knowledge. We continued to conduct courtesy calls on Senior Military Commanders, letting them know that your Navy League stands ready to help in any way we can.
In March of 2007 we sponsored a symposium at the USS Bowfin Museum where we prepared the community for the Commissioning events in may of 2007. Those events were truly remarkable as we brought Hawaiian culture into to all aspects of the event.
Fore ‘n Aft Magazine, which is owned and operated by Rick Terwilliger, continues to be a premier communication tool and valuable resource of information and education for our Honolulu Council Navy Leaguers.
The Community Relations Advisory Board, also known as CRAB, is organized by Pauline Worsham and chaired by Tim Guard. It is a valuable and instrumental tool for the Navy League to provide support to Commander Naval Region Hawaii (COMNAVREGHI). The CRAB Board meets regularly with high-ranking uniformed Navy Officers and Senior Enlisted Leaders.
The Bridge, headed up by RADM Jim McClellad USCG (Ret.), continues to provide business and community leaders with unique educational opportunities and the ability to interact with Military and Government decision makers at the highest level on a monthly basis. Jim has taken a membership of about 85 to a high of 130 members.
The Honolulu Council Navy League took the extraordinary step of filing an AMICUS Briefing in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to allow important Sonar training during the 2006 Rim-of-the-Pacific (RIMPAC) Naval Exercises. Our Deputy Judge Advocate General, Mike Lily, prepared a comprehensive and articulate argument in just 48 hours. The Navy proceeded to conduct a successful RIMPAC Exercise. We acted upon the urging of Navy Officials to publicize the Navy’s environmental stewardship with regard to Marine mammals and the use of Underwater Sonar. The Navy takes very seriously their environmental stewardship and is pro-active in protecting the environment. We authored articles in The Honolulu Advertiser and Fore N’ Aft Magazine to provide the public with information on this issue. |
