HO, HO, HO!!!! That is what many golfers playing in the Navy League’s Toys for Tots Golf Tournament at the Navy Marine GC heard throughout the afternoon. What they saw was Santa dressed in his finest Hawaiian print outfit teeing it up to help support the U.S. Marine Reserve’s Toys for Tots program.
Not to be deterred by the weather or that Santa was watching their every move to make sure they were counting all their strokes, 160 golfers drove, pitched, and putted around the course. In the end, the real winners were the many less fortunate children that would benefit from the $6,000 and over 320 toys generated by the golf tournament.
Thanks to the involvement of the U.S. Marines, hard work of the many volunteers, generosity of the golfers, and assistance of the golf course and restaurant staff the day was filled with fun, plus a lot of good and bad golf. One of the highlights of the day was the ‘Beat Santa and His Helpers Contest”. The team led by Andy Chun won the prize for beating Santa’s team of RDML Tim Alexander, USN; Brig Gen Rex McMillian, USMC; CAPT Gilbert Kanazawa (ret), USCG; and Mel “Santa” Ing. The overwhelming participation in the contest may have been the threat that anyone not signing up would have their picture taken sitting on Santa’s lap and it would have it posted on the web.
Thanks go to the Honorary Chairperson Ms P. Pasha Baker, whose late husband started the Toys for Tots program in Hawaii, the staff at the Navy Marine Golf Course, Sam Snead’s Restaurant, the many volunteers, and of course, the many golfers, all who made the day very special.
MAHALO!!!!!
